In practical connector applications, IP65, IP67, and IP68 are among the most common ingress protection ratings. Among these, IP68 represents the highest level of dust‑tightness and water resistance; however, it is important to note that for connector products, this rating is typically achieved only when the connector is mated and locked. When the connector is unmated, its protection rating drops accordingly—for example, to IPXXB.

I. Electrical Parameters: The Fundamental Basis for Selection

  • Current-carrying capacity: The connector’s rated current must exceed the equipment’s maximum operating current, and derating should be factored in to provide an adequate safety margin, thereby preventing overcurrent conditions from compromising normal equipment operation.

  • Rated Voltage: Covers both AC and DC voltage types; when selecting a connector, ensure its rated voltage meets the equipment’s actual operating requirements. For example, some connectors are suitable for 1000 V DC applications, while others can accommodate either 750 V AC or 1000 V DC operating conditions.

II. Mechanical Structure and Connection Method: Ensuring Connection Stability

  • Locking method: A mechanism with reliable locking performance should be selected, such as push‑pull self‑locking or snap‑fit locking. These designs effectively prevent the connector from accidentally disconnecting during operation and maintain a stable connection even in vibratory environments.

  • Enclosure Materials: The mainstream enclosure materials fall into two categories: metal and plastic. Metal enclosures offer greater structural strength and superior electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) shielding, while plastic enclosures effectively reduce the risk of electric shock and are lighter in weight, making them well-suited to a variety of application scenarios.

  • Anti-misinsertion design: By leveraging a proprietary connector geometry and keying scheme, the physical orientation of the connector is constrained, ensuring that it can only be mated in the correct configuration. This prevents damage to equipment or degradation of connection performance caused by improper insertion.

III. Environmental Adaptability and Reliability: Designed for Long-Term Use in Real-World Scenarios

  • Environmental Resistance: When equipment is deployed in specialized environments such as marine vessels or outdoor industrial machinery, it may be exposed to harsh conditions like salt spray, high humidity, and corrosive chemicals. In such cases, it is essential to select connectors with appropriate protection ratings to ensure reliable performance under complex operating conditions.

  • Mating Cycle Life: If the device’s interface requires frequent plugging and unplugging, be sure to check the connector’s specified mechanical mating cycle life during selection to ensure it meets the equipment’s entire service life, thereby preventing premature connector failure due to repeated insertion and removal.

What’s the difference between RF connectors and low-frequency connectors? Do you really know?

A low-frequency connector is a type of connector used to link electronic or electrical devices, with a frequency range typically below several hundred kilohertz. These connectors are commonly employed for low-speed data transmission and the conveyance of low-frequency signals—such as audio and video—as well as for power and control signal connections.
